A Little of This… a little of That…

It’s just past Thanksgiving! Time to celebrate home, family, good times, happy times! And a pumpkin pie was the ticket to help me spread the good news.
My mother was a fabu baker and pumpkin pies were a reliable holiday dessert. She made her own pie crust and it was always dee-licious!
I was lucky to have all the spices on my top shelf… ginger, cloves, cinnamon plus a can of pumpkin pie filling. Only thing I had to buy was the crust. Try as I might I can never get pie crust right. But FYI, the crust you buy in the dairy case is just fine. Especially for a one crust pie. Just let it come to room temp, unroll, or unfold – whatever – and voila! Perfect crust just waiting for the filling.
Baking took a bit longer than I expected… and letting it sit to calm down after baking?… And… the whipped topping was just what it needed as a finish
I had a piece for breakfast! YumMM…. It is, after all, a vegetable pie. Very healthy.
…. More kitchen efforts
I tried my hand at bread sticks… not an easy trick to pull off. I’ve watched baking shows on TV and it all looks so easy. But it’s not. My bread sticks were ok, but no way would they last beyond one day. Hard as a rock.

Today, I decided to try my hand at crock pot cooking… making a beef stew. I just checked…. it’s about 4 hours into the slow cooking… smells great but I tested the potatoes and they are still quite grim.
I tried another experiment… biscuits to eat with the stew – used pancake mix and added vegetable oil and an egg. The recipe on the box suggests it might work out. I sprinkled Oregano and Sesame Seeds on top of the “biscuits” to add some flavor that might go with beef stew. We shall see.
A true Julia would have thrown the potatoes against the wall to soften them up before putting them in the crock pot. I understand your pie was excellent and well received. Bravo.
Tossing partially cooked potatoes against the wall does little to soften them… But! after a couple more hours, the potatoes were edible… and the biscuits, although not perfecto, were fine enough to sop up the gravy. The dinner was a minor success. I shall try again in a few weeks.
I would love a piece of that pumpkin pie!!
Yesterday was bread… next baking adventure: I’d like to try a torte!!! but they are so fattening! Can you make a veggie torte????
