DILLARD BEACH MYSTERY UPDATE

You can add your comments/suggestions on this work at the bottom of this page…

Dillard, September 20, 2018

Rebekah left Boswell’s shop and walked in the direction of the village docks. The small fleet of fishing boats had returned and the men were busy unloading the morning catch. She could see John Rand, the tallest of the figures, working his nets at the far end of the pier.
“And how is your catch this day, Mister Rand?”
John turned and when he saw who it was had greeted him, flashed a wide grin in Rebekah’s direction. “This day has been a fair one, Mistress. The cod are plenty and the flounder were begging to be caught. ’Twas a good day for fishing.” He looked down at the crate holding his catch. “Would you be wanting a fish or two for your pan this day?”
She studied him a minute before answering. A shock of red hair had fallen across his forehead. It covered his eyes and gave him the look of a boyish rogue. She watched as, with a quick sweep of his hand, he brushed the hair back to reveal the darkest green eyes Rebekah had ever encountered. In that moment, she realized, Rand had no idea how handsome a man he was.
“Do you want a fish for your supper, Miss?” Rand asked again.
Rebekah looked up, startled, as if shaken from a dream.
“Fish? Of course. For certain. A small one, though. It is only myself after all.”
Rand gave her a broad smile. “There is a sure remedy for that condition, Mistress. I am full certain half these lads who now unload their nets would be happy to sit down and sup with ye if only given a nod.” He turned and begged an answer from the nearest fellow. “Tell her that is a fair truth, Daniel.” The scrawny boy that stood nearby pretended not to hear. “Daniel?” Rand repeated his question. “Do you not think it would be a fair thing to sit and sup with Mistress Howland?”
“I think it would be a far better time for you, John Rand, as I believe you fancy her most of all us lads,” Daniel answered with conviction.
John Rand blushed, his face turning crimson. “You catch me in my own net!” he exclaimed, and without missing a beat, turned to Rebekah Howland and gave a slight bow. “Mistress Howland, I would be more than pleased to join with ye to feast on fish ‘o mine and brew ‘o yours. Name both the day and place and I shall be at your side.”
Rebekah had to smile. She was used to the banter amongst the fishermen, but this was the first time John Rand had paid her such direct attention. She determined to take him up on his offer.
“I would be happy to join you at the meeting house gathering after morning worship next Sabbath.”
“I am not familiar… I don’t often join in the gathering…” Rand’s voice trailed off.
“That is of no concern Mr. Rand. Everyone is welcome. I will bring bread and cheese for us to share.”

A reasonable exchange although I wonder at a fisherman type sharing his thoughts about someone with another fisherman. I would think he wouldn’t set himself up for teasing. Just a thought.

I love the colonial use of words used during their conversations. I still wondered about the dates though. At the beginning of Chapt. 3 the date is Sept. 16, 1678, the day she interacts with Boswell. Chapt. 4 we see her leaving Boswell’s shop but the date is now listed as Sept. 20th. I’m also wondering why the chapter year date changed from 1678 to 2018?

Dates and those kind of mistakes will be caught later by a good editor… but it’s good to have your eyes on it giving me good advice. Corrections most welcome. :_)
